Chicago Collection
Timeless Style. Through more than 30 years of
business, Mary Walter has certainly undergone plenty of
changes. Still, through every relocation and evolution,
the store has stayed true to its core concept: chic and
sophisticated clothing for the professional woman...
Using her background in textiles and design to anticipate
her customers' needs (Walter actually made clothes while
working at Arabesque), Walter chooses her stock particularly
carefully, "I can anticipate whether something is going
to fit or whether it's going to be alterable," she
says. "If we can't put {a piece} on one of our customers,
we won't buy it."
Always ready and willing to play stylist to her clients,
Walter accomodates her patrons in a friendly, but no-holds-barred,
manner. "I think we are honest," she says, noting
that her customers return the favor. "They are the
first to tell us what they like and don't like. They tell
us what worked and what didn't." And Walter knows how
to complement her clothes with a bright bangle or a great
handbag. "We don't like anybody leaving unless it's
a complete outfit," she says.
This summer, Walter brings in a parade of customer favorites
like Marc Cain, focusing particularly on top trends such
as slim legs and bright hues.. - . Chicago Collection, Summer

Today Chicago Woman
If you've never shopped at Mary Walter, add one more
resolution to your 2008 list and visit her boutique for
stylish, affordable attire. Mary, who's in the highly competitive
field of retail, celebrates the store's 30th anniversary
this June. When she opened her boutique, it was targeted
toward the businesswoman, but over the years she's added
an impressive array of casual clothes and even formalwear
to her inventory. Customers appreciate the fact that with
her selections, you don't see yourself coming and going.
In her interview, Mary tells TCW that fashion is an evolution
and it's interesting to note that her store, too, has evolved
over the past three decades, bridging the gap of conservative
chic and cutting edge casual. - Sherren Leigh, Editor.
